At the University of Brighton, student PE teachers who are enrolled in the PGCE program recently completed their first school placements, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey. After a two-week inter-placement period dedicated to enhancing their knowledge and skills, these aspiring educators are now better prepared for their next placements starting on February 23rd.

During the inter-placement program, students engaged in both practical and theoretical learning sessions. They took part in indoor and outdoor athletics sessions, where they improved their technical knowledge through hands-on practice in disciplines such as shot put, discus, and javelin, using equipment tailored for these environments. They also explored fundamental movement skills, jumping, sprinting, and pacing, which are crucial for their teaching repertoire.
Conferences and Professional Advice
A key aspect of the inter-placement was a conference devoted to the teaching of accredited PE courses. Here, students presented insightful topics like the impacts of the Olympic Games, sport-related violence, and the intersection of sponsorship and media in sports. Notably, they were able to receive guidance from Craig Bull, an Executive Head Teacher and Brighton alumnus, who emphasized the importance of understanding application processes, interview techniques, and the significance of thorough school research as they prepare for their first teaching roles.
Community Connections and Health Promotion
Further connecting with the community, the students organized a V-Cert revision day for year 11 pupils from Peacehaven Community School, focusing on fitness and sports related to their upcoming qualification. This initiative not only benefited the students at Peacehaven but also fostered a spirit of community engagement and health promotion among future educators.

Pearson V-Cert qualifications, which are being introduced in several secondary schools, aim to provide students with practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. Trainee teachers received insights on how to teach swimming, orienteering, and field games, which are essential skills they will pass onto their pupils as part of a holistic physical education curriculum.
